Maximilian Büsser never became a car designer. But sometimes, dreams we thought we had left behind can come true in a new and even more exciting way. Over the past decade, Büsser has gradually revisited his childhood obsession with cars through MB&F's automotive-inspired Machines collection. The latest chapter is the purple CarbonMacrolon® HM8 Mark 2—a continuation of a passion that has been building since 2012's HM5. On MB&F's 20th anniversary, the new HM8 Mark 2 follows the HM5, which was followed by the HMX (2015) and HM8 'Can-Am' (2016). The HM8 Mark 2 features a vintage tachymeter-like jumping hour and minute display beneath a 'double bubble' sapphire crystal. The design was inspired by the Amida Digitrend, a short-lived but legendary watch from 1976. MB&F reinterpreted the concept, projecting the time vertically through a sapphire prism, and creating a 'pseudo-digital' sheen on the black metallized sapphire crystal using overlapping discs and a clever layer of Super-LumiNova®.
But MB&F wasn't content with just optical cleverness. The entire HM8 platform is built around a standalone titanium chassis – a waterproof structure onto which the colour-saturated CarbonMacrolon® body panels are mounted. This composite material, developed exclusively for MB&F, consists of a polymer matrix infused with carbon nanotubes. It has a stronger and stiffer structure than conventional carbon fibre, is eight times lighter than steel and can be milled, polished or painted like metal. The colour itself is made from metallic mineral pigments mixed into the resin in a carefully controlled process, mimicking the paint finish of high-end sports cars. As Büsser himself explains in the 2024 Blue Edition, this is more than just a surface treatment. The case construction is framed by a double-curved sapphire crystal, one of the most complex processes ever. MB&F claims it costs 30 to 40 times more than a standard domed sapphire crystal and is prone to heart-breaking breakage during manufacturing. Only one supplier was willing to take the risk.
The HM8 Mark 2 is powered by a self-winding movement based on a Girard-Perregaux movement, visible through a sapphire crystal cover and brought to life by a 22K gold battle-axe rotor. It also features a special crown system with a “double clutch” mechanism that releases with a push and three-quarter turn, improving safety while saving space.
The new purple model is made of grade 5 titanium and follows the previous limited edition green and blue models.
