| Vancouver-based social media company Hootsuite Inc. is laying off 30 per cent of its staff, the latest company to announce layoffs during a current surge in cutbacks in the tech sector.
According to a statement to TechCrunch by CEO Tom Keiser, the layoffs are meant to refocus their strategies to drive efficiency, growth and financial sustainability. However, there were no specific statements regarding the number of layoffs, nor do the laid-off employees have been reported to receive any severance.
Hootsuite declined an interview request from BIV and said it would not be providing any further statements at this time.
The company employs about 500 workers in B.C. and more than 1,200 across the globe, meaning more than 350 workers will be out of work. It’s not clear how many workers in Vancouver are directly affected by the layoffs.
The layoffs are the latest in a wave of pink slips in Canadian tech.
Earlier this summer, WealthSimple laid off 13 per cent (new window) of its staff, followed by Ottawa-based Shopify laying off 10 per cent (new window) a few weeks later.
However, a report from The Globe and Mail suggests that the Canada-based company–currently having 1,400 people on board–will be laying off around 400 employees.
